What Is A Horror?

Horror movies tend to strive to elicit emotions of fright, terror and aim to invoke our hidden worst fears. Their plots follow themes of horror, the supernatural, mental illness, death and villains. The earlier horror movies were based on gothic horror literature, for example the texts"Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde" , "Frankenstein" and "Dracula" being the most well known pieces of gothic literature. Nowadays horror films are a lot more broad in their inspiration, many drawn from psychology and the insecurities of life after world war 2.
